Plumbing: How to Address a Hot Water Issue in Your Home
If your heating and hot water have suddenly stopped working, you may be looking for an explanation as to why this issue has occurred and the steps you may be able to take to remedy it. Read on to find out everything you need to know.
Malfunctioning thermostat
If you have no hot water or heating in your home, the first thing you need to check out is the digital thermostat. The thermostat is the control system which allows you to input commands into your home's heating system. The first thing you need to take a look at is the battery level. If the batteries are low or dead, the thermostat will be unable to communicate with the boiler. If the batteries' power level is low or if the entire system is dead, you should replace them using high-quality replacements. Cheaper batteries may not supply enough power to the unit to ensure effective operation.
Faulty receiver
If your thermostat appears to be fully powered and properly set-up, you should next turn your attention to the receiver. The receiver will typically be located close to the boiler, either inside the boiler cupboard or on the other side of one of the walls which surround the unit. When you input a command into the thermostat, a signal should be sent to the receiver which will, in turn, trigger the boiler to kick into life so it provides hot water to your home. Most receivers have two lights. One light will signal that the unit is powered, the other will indicate that the receiver is receiving a signal from the digital thermostat.
Broken boiler
If both the thermostat and the receiver appear to be in good working order, now it is time to take a look at the boiler. There are a number of reasons why the boiler in your home may stop working. Take a look at the pressure valve to see if the water pressure is too low. Most boilers lose pressure as time passes. If the pressure is not within the normal range, use the tap attached to the boiler to add more water to the system. If this does not work, reset and reignite the boiler using the controls. If this does not work, you will need to contact a plumber to inspect the system.
